How is your oven doing?

If you have looked at our blog you can see we are very new as “Sugar Mama's Cakery”. We are trying to decide exactly what our blog will be when it grows up. We love making cakes, cupcakes and cookies. We love making them so much that there is no way we could possibly be good mom's or grand mama’s if we made our families eat all our creations. That is why we decided to start selling all of our fun goodies.

We know that you probably like making yummy treats yourself, so we have decided to periodically share tips with you. We have been trying to think what the first fun tip should be? We concluded that no matter how good your recipe is, it will not turn out if your oven isn’t working properly. This being said the first tip we would want to share with you is about your oven. As a novas I thought if my oven beeped at the temperature I set it at it was good to go. Not so! Let’s check to see if your oven is calibrated correctly.

I have three ovens and when I checked the first time only one of the three were baking at the correct temperature. You can check your oven by buying a very inexpensive oven thermometer.

These steps will tell you if you have problems. Place the thermometer in the middle rack at the middle of the oven and set your oven at 325. Once the oven indicates that the temperature has been reached, you must wait 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes open your oven door and see if the oven thermometer agrees. Do this exercise at each 25 degree intervals. If your oven isn’t checking out at the same temperature you have problems. Your next step will be to go to your owner’s manual for your oven and look at the section "Calibrating your oven" or call a repair man. Check out this for more details.

A side note when baking always give your oven 30 minutes once it reaches the desired temperature this gives more time for the oven to stabilized so all the corners are heated at this temperature and for a greater opportunity for successful baking. Good luck and let us know if this tip helped you!
